If you didn’t learn about this day in school it’s very likely that it’s not your fault. School age children in the United States are often taught that slavery ended with Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation 1863.

Well, word didn’t travel as fast back then as it does now and as of June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Texas were still being held hostage. On June 19, 1865, federal troops entered the state and punished the slave holders for not upholding the new law.
