March is women’s history month and Netflix is gearing up to release an anxiously-awaited biopic about the life of one of the most influential MC’s, Roxanne Shante’.

 

Directed and written by Michael Larnell, the film stars Chanté Adams, Nia Long, and Mahershala Ali, as well as Elvis Nolasco, Kevin Phillips, Shenell Edmonds, and Adam Horovitz.

Produced by Pharrell and Forest Whitaker, Roxanne Roxanne focuses on the life of Lolita “Roxanne Shanté” Gooden, depicting her early years as a teen in Queens and her rise to Hip Hop history.

Chanté Adams plays a young Shante’ Shante’ in film said, “I play Roxanne Shanté from the age of 14 up to about 18,” she told Deadline. “I had about a week and a half between the moment I was cast to our first day of shooting, so I went that time, hours each day, just researching her on the Internet, watching video interviews and her performances, reading articles, anything that I could get my hands on about her that would bring me closer to the character.”

Roxanne Roxanne premieres March 23 on Netflix.
